Here’s a good question to ask yourself: Why?

We usually don’t ask ourselves WHY we do things the way we do. And we should!! Do you know why? Aha! That’s the entire point: when you know WHY you do things the way you do, then you have better understanding and more power in your life.

This is because when you ask WHY you are attaching meaning to your choices and actions. Without meaning, life can feel hollow and empty.

Imagine, if you will, that I own a pie shop. Ahh, the smell of flaky pastry crust and the promise of sweet pie awesomeness that is only a fork-full away! What would it be like to cut into a pie, day after day, only to find that there is no filling in any of them? Eventually, you wouldn’t want to come back to my shop. It doesn’t matter that the crust is good, a pie needs filling! This is true in our lives as well. Just taking action isn’t fulfilling: the WHY behind our actions is.

Try this with your current job. Why do you do it? Some of you might say, “Because I like it,” while others say, “It pays the bills.”

But I want you to go a step deeper. Why does paying your bills matter? Well, maybe it puts food on your table, allows you to provide for your kids/family, or allows you to engage in your true passion, which is bonsai training. Now, your job has meaning!

This is because “why” is the most important question you can ask yourself. Why? Well, that’s exactly it! “Why” makes you have to explain and delve deeper into the motivation behind your choices.  By asking “Why?” you get out of autopilot and back into the driver’s seat.

So the next time you cut a slice of the proverbial pie called life, a good question to ask yourself is why?

Here’s a hint: if you don’t like it, don’t settle! Keep going because while you cannot always do the things you want, you can find value and meaning in the things you must do and make yourself richer for it.
